Transportation Across the Washington, MO Bridge
Every year, we have dozens of bicyclists stay with us as they make their way across the state of Missouri via the Katy Trail. We have served extreme cyclists, repeat cyclists who come back year after year, and we have also had guests that weren’t quite sure what they were getting in to. No matter your skill level, DeBourge Guesthouse is a great option for you as you make your way through Marthasville, Dutzow, and Augusta. We are happy to pick you up at the Dutzow trail head at no cost. Or even better, just east of the trail head is Blumenhof Winery. While you wait for your ride, why not enjoy a bottle of Missouri wine? We’ll pick you up at the winery too!
The bridge across the Missouri River at Washington is scary. You do not want to cross it on your bike. A new, bicycle friendly bridge is under construction, but until the Spring of 2019, please take us up on our offer and let us get you across the bridge.
Why Stay in Washington, MO?
Washington is home to many great restaurants. You will have a lot more options staying in Washington than in the smaller towns right on the trail. Here is a list of some of our favorites. All of these restaurants are just blocks from DeBourge Guesthouse, and the walk is nice and easy.
On several occasions, bike riders have needed to repair their bike when they get to town, and Revolution Cycles has the expertise you will want to get back and running in no time.
If you don’t feel like going all the way across the state, Washington is a great place to begin or end your journey. The Amtrak station downtown has two trains that go toward Kansas City, and two that go toward St. Louis daily. The trains are bicycle friendly, there is plenty of parking if you wish to leave your car, and the station is only blocks from DeBourge House. Here is the Schedule for Amtrak’s Missouri River Runner.
Planning the Rest of your Katy Trail Journey
Much of the Katy Trail is through beautiful Missouri countryside. Bed & Breakfast Inns of Missouri (BBIM) has a list of inns that cater to Katy Trail bike riders. BBIM Inns go through an inspection process to insure a quality and safe stay for their guests. These inns represent the best Bed & Breakfasts in the state of Missouri, and you can rest easy knowing that you are being hosted and served by professional innkeepers that know how to cater to bicycle riders. Some of these inns may offer laundry services since packing light is a must on the trail. Others may offer quick grab-and-go breakfasts so you can get on your way before the heat of a summer day takes over. Here is the list of BBIM Inns on the Katy Trail.
When to ride the Katy Trail
We have had riders stay with us as early as March and as late as November. In the springtime, the weather can be unpredictable, and severe weather can occur. As you get into the summer months, it gets incredibly hot and humid. Most of the riders that stay with us ride the Katy Trail in the fall. Mid-to-late September through early November seems to be ideal. The wineries in the area are harvesting their grapes, the leaves are changing colors, and the temperatures have cooled off.
